Interview with Blythe Teh Engstroem: The Incredible Journey of 20 Years of the VFCO

Together with Martin, Blythe Teh Engstroem founded the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra. A look back at the 20th anniversary of an extraordinary musical journey.

“Our mission is not to conquer the world, but to move those who listen to us.”
Blythe Teh Engstroem, Co-Artistic Director

How did this exceptional adventure begin?

It all started with the Verbier Festival Orchestra (VFO). The musicians only stayed for three years, then a new generation would take over. When leaving us in the early 2000s, many wondered: “Why stop?”

At the same time, we dreamed of a different repertoire than symphonic music. These two desires came together and, in 2006, the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra (VFCO) was born.

Gábor Takács-Nagy quickly became its central figure. Under what circumstances?

Gábor’s arrival shaped the identity of the VFCO. He possesses an extraordinary knowledge of chamber music. He doesn’t simply conduct an orchestra: he creates a spirit. Gábor is our source of inspiration; thanks to him, we have expanded our repertoire. But we still invite other conductors, as this diversity is enriching.

Who are the musicians of the VFCO?

Most are former members of the VFO. We select the best, but not solely for their virtuosity. We seek musicians who love to listen, to share.

At the VFCO, music is a human adventure based on the pleasure of playing. Over the years, a core group has formed. This loyalty is undoubtedly one of our greatest assets.

What are the highlights of this 20th anniversary?

The year began with the Verbier Festival Shenzhen, followed by tours in South Korea, Japan, and Germany. In Verbier, we will celebrate this anniversary with a special concert, a little surprise, on 24 July. Twenty years marks the age of maturity, but we want to remain true to what has always driven us: playing in a spirit of constantly renewed discovery.
