Since the inception of the Verbier Festival, Martin Engstroem has embraced the idea of taking risks, curating concerts that can’t be heard elsewhere, whether at other summer festivals or during the regular season. The Rencontres Inédites have become a defining feature of the Verbier Festival, bringing together exceptional chamber music in rare combinations of musicians and repertoires. Many of these encounters have become legendary, perfectly reflecting the Festival’s spirit of curiosity, fellowship, and generosity. Eight Rencontres Inédites are featured this summer, with the first four presented this week.

Ilya Gringolts | Lawrence Power | Nicolas Altstaedt | Nicolas Hartmann
Magdalena Bogner | Rémi Grouiller | Aleksandar Tasić | Simon Van Holen
Clément Charpentier-Leroy | Tjasha Gafner | Jean-Efflam Bavouzet
This performance offers something truly unique—an innovative harp arrangement of Haydn’s Trio for flute, cello, and piano, never before heard. The talented Swiss harpist Tjasha Gafner replaces the pianist, delivering a sensitive and vibrant rendition of this chamber music gem.
Since the success of his piece Aubade, Poulenc has been aware of his talent for writing for woodwinds. He decided to use it in this Sextet for piano and winds (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn) which perfectly illustrates all the harmonic richness of the great French composer.
Finally, Mozart takes the stage with his Divertimento K. 563, performed by an extraordinary trio: Ilya Gringolts on violin, Lawrence Power on viola, and Nicolas Altstaedt on cello.

Sheku Kanneh-Mason | Behzod Abduraimov
Behzod Abduraimov left a lasting impression on audiences last year with a stunning recital in the Salle des Combins, particularly with his captivating interpretation of Pictures at an Exhibition. This year, he returns to the Église for the fourth Rencontres Inédites, joined by an exceptional group of chamber musicians: Johan Dalene, the 24-year-old Swedish-Norwegian violinist, winner of the prestigious Carl Nielsen International Competition in 2019 (don’t miss his recital with Julien Quentin on July 29); the brilliant violist Lawrence Power, a familiar face at the Festival; and Sheku Kanneh-Mason, the acclaimed cellist and esteemed alumnus of the Academy. Together, they will perform chamber music masterpieces by Haydn with the Trio Tzigane, Beethoven, and Saint-Saëns. It’s the perfect way to start your day in Verbier, immersed in the intimate setting of the Église, with some of the brightest talents of the new generation.
