Mao Fujita plays Saint-Saëns: Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 22: III. Presto
In the composition process of the New World Symphony, Dvořák blends the distinctly Czech elements of his musical language into a more universal discourse with heroic overtones, even quoting a song from the Americas. The result is a turbulent, tragic work, bearing the imprint of his friend Johannes Brahms.
Quite different is the energy that drives Kodály’s Dances of Galánta. Inspired by Romani music from the village of Galánta, renowned for its strong musical tradition, the work is a reminder of how these Eastern European musics were shaped by their exchanges with the countries of the East: the entire Ottoman Empire seems to emerge from this languorous clarinet solo, these sensuous pentatonic scales. The rare but delectable variations by von Dohnányi for piano and orchestra complete a programme that conductor Gábor Takács-Nagy, himself an heir to this Czech musical tradition, will mark with all his eminence.
