KIAN SOLTANI / SHIRAZ ENSEMBLE
Kian Soltani is one of the most acclaimed cellists of his generation, sought after by today’s leading conductors (Barenboim, Gatti, Pappano, Shani…). Yet he remains deeply connected to his oriental roots and, with his ensemble Shiraz — founded by his father — enjoys presenting creative programmes inspired by Persian music. Kian Soltani plays Schumann: Adagio & Allegro in A-Flat Major, Op. 70 (Julien Quentin)
Kian Soltani needs no introduction. At just 33 years of age, this charismatic soloist and remarkable chamber musician rubs shoulders with the greats. It would be easy to forget that, as well as the cello, the Austrian musician of Iranian origin is also a virtuoso of the kamânche, a traditional Persian bowed fiddle. Bringing together two musical traditions, the concert showcases Kian Soltani’s career and invites the audience to succumb to the spell of the tår, a type of Iranian lute, and the tombak, a traditional drum. It is a family tribute, as the cellist’s father, who left his native Iran for Austria, is himself a bassoonist and duduk player. “With its improvised sections and constant ornamentation, Persian music is freer than classical music, and at least as complex,” said Kian Soltani. This is a rare opportunity to experience it, performed by artists who combine authenticity and excellence.
