LA TRAVIATA – VFJO / GAFFIGAN / ACADEMY ATELIER LYRIQUE
Throughout the Verbier Festival, the singers of the Academy's Atelier Lyrique — selected through an exceptionally rigorous process — receive intensive coaching. They present the fruit of their work at the Festival’s closing event: a staged performance of a major opera from the repertoire. This year, it will be Verdi’s legendary La Traviata, conducted by James Gaffigan, Music Director of the superb Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra.

James Gaffigan conducts Stravinsky: The Rake’s Progress (VFJO)
At its premiere in 1853, La traviata confounded audiences. Far removed from the heroic narratives then in vogue, Verdi placed at the centre of the opera a figure who is intimate, fragile, and deeply human. Today, the work stands as one of the defining achievements of the repertoire, anchored by a soprano role of exceptional depth and complexity. For any young singer, taking on Violetta marks an important step. Within the Atelier Lyrique of the Verbier Festival Academy, the role offers emerging artists the opportunity to develop on stage in a demanding and supportive environment. Leading the Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra is its Music Director, James Gaffigan, who has held the position for several years. A conductor with deep experience in opera, he brings a strong sense of the style and supports these artists in one of the repertoire’s most iconic works.
