Biography

Born in 1967 in Reims (Champagne, France), Vincent Segal began his musical studies at the age of six in a specialized music class.
Until his baccalaureate, he divided his time between school and the regional conservatory, followed by the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Lyon, where he was awarded a first prize by unanimous decision with the congratulations of the jury.

In 1986, he spent a year in Canada at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity on a scholarship.
While traveling in the United States, he explored various musical movements such as hip-hop, reggae, afro-beat, and industrial music. There, he met Eric Bobo (Cypress Hill, Beastie Boys), Harley White (Blackalicious), and F. Black Davis (Sunkist), with whom he formed the group “Papa’s Culture.” Following an American tour with Chuck Brown and the P-Funk All Stars, and a brief tenure at the Opéra de Lyon, he settled in Paris.

His work spans contemporary music (IRCAM, Villa Médicis, Olympic Gramofon) and world music (Cesaria Evora, Nana Vasconcelos, Carlinhos Brown, Mama Ohandja, Tama…), as well as jazz (Glenn Ferris, Urban Mood…) and hip-hop (Puppa Leslie, Mad Professor, DJ Mehdi, Blackalicious), rock, and chanson (-M-, Ben Harper, Vic Moan, Franck Monnet, Alain Bashung, Thomas Fersen, Vanessa Paradis, Steve Naïve, Marianne Faithfull, Sting…), and film scores (Alexandre Desplat).

In 1999, he formed the duo Bumcello with Cyril Atef, with whom he has recorded six albums. In 2006, Bumcello was awarded a Victoire de la Musique in the Dance/Electronic category.

In 2009, he recorded the duo album “Chamber Music” with kora player Ballaké Sissoko; the record won a Victoire du Jazz in 2010 and was named one of the top ten albums of the year by Le Monde, NPR, The Guardian, and The Wall Street Journal.

He has also performed for several years with the French-Malian rapper Oxmo Puccino on his acoustic tours. He produced and performed on Roi sans carrosse, which received the Victoire de la Musique for Urban Music Album of the Year in 2013.

In 2016, he was nominated for a Victoire de la Musique in the World Music Album of the Year category for Musique de Nuit.
