The singers and instrumentalists of the Verbier Festival Academy trace a path from the playful energy of Beethoven’s String Quintet to the quiet consolation of Elegischer Gesang and the profound emotion of the Cavatina. A compact Fugue opens the musical programme, revealing another facet of the composer’s imagination. Along the way, Gerald Finley reads poetry by Goethe and an extract from Beethoven’s Heiligenstadt Testament. These brief readings bring nature, longing and the composer’s own struggles into conversation with the music.
