MARC BOUCHKOV / MIKHAÏL PLETNEV
Written in 1886, César Franck’s Sonata for Violin and Piano dazzles with its fervour, its romanticism and its intensity. This chamber music summit will be a fitting conclusion to a high-flying recital led by two magnetic soloists: violinist Marc Bouchkov and pianist Mikhaïl Pletnev.

Having given us a superb complete cycle of Beethoven’s sonatas a few years ago, Marc Bouchkov builds his concert around a youthful Sonatina by Schubert. To accompany him, the Belgian violinist can count on one of the great musicians of our time whom the Verbier Festival faithfully welcomes back this summer: Mikhaïl Pletnev. The last chamber work by its composer, Grieg’s Sonata No. 3 paints an impressive palette of emotions: the Norwegian composer’s unusually dark inspiration embraces feelings of searing expressiveness. Transcribed by Pletnev himself (it was originally a violin concerto), Alexey Shor’s richly sonorous sonata has established itself as a recent classic of the repertoire. And to finish, what a pleasure to hear Bouchkov’s radiant 1630 Maggini in the little phrase of Franck’s Sonata that so obsessed a certain Marcel Proust!
