AUGUSTIN HADELICH / YUJA WANG

Header image of page : AUGUSTIN HADELICH / YUJA WANG
Mozart, Fauré, Beach, Prokofiev

A great duo is born. Beyond their talent, Augustin Hadelich and Yuja Wang share many things in common: a similar background (both Americans born abroad), transcendent virtuosity and the same love for the music of Mozart and Prokofiev of whom they are incomparable interpreters. A first-ever recital that holds the greatest promise.

Of the thirty or so violin sonatas that have come down to us, No. 21 is surely one of Mozart’s most moving. The only work in a minor key in the corpus, it was written during the famous stay in Paris where the Austrian composer lost his mother. It is not known whether the work was conceived before or after this tragic event, although the music bears witness to uncommon nobility and gravity. Augustin Hadelich’s smiling violin then blends wonderfully with Yuja Wang’s orchestral piano in Gabriel Fauré’s amorous Sonata No. 1, written at the time of his (short-lived) engagement to Marianne Viardot.
Now being rediscovered in earnest, the music of the American composer Amy Beach stands out for its warm expressiveness, the Romance of 1893 demanding both a fine sense of phrasing and impeccable rhythmic suppleness. What a joy, finally, to hear our two soloists in the music of the composer whose recent performance history they have marked, one on the violin, the other at the piano! Lyrical and whimsical, Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 2 is the logical crowning glory for our duettists.
