Three sonatas like so many faces of Beethoven. In the Sonata No. 2, the music breathes an enthusiasm and a joy tinged with humour that delights eardrums and funny bones alike. An abrupt change of atmosphere comes with the urgent and impressive Sonata No. 7 in four movements, in which the German composer returns to the contrasts that characterise his writing. Dating from 1812, the Sonata No. 10 remains surprisingly in the shadow of its predecessor, Sonata No. 9, the ‘Kreutzer’; it is nevertheless a masterpiece of fine sonic plenitude, with bucolic, pastoral accents. A superb conclusion to a cycle which, after such legendary partnerships as Arthur Grumiaux / Clara Haskil, Itzhak Perlman / Vladimir Ashkenazy or Yehudi Menuhin / Wilhelm Kempff, finds in Maxim Vengerov and Martha Argerich a duo worthy of writing the legend of the Verbier Festival.
