For this second encounter, our two soloists focus on the middle-period works, in which Beethoven displays an infectious good humour and joy. The undisputed highlight of the evening, the Sonata No. 5 is (with No. 9, the ‘Kreutzer’) the most famous work in the cycle. It is also one of the most luminous, fully justifying its nickname ‘Spring’. One is captivated by the grace of the opening, the violin taking flight like a bird. The slow movement is an idyll between the two instruments, piano and violin conversing in turn. The piquant Scherzo has one peculiarity: it lasts only a minute! As for the fourth and final movement, it plunges the listener once more into a gentle springtime euphoria. A marvel of a sonata, performed by two musical legends of our time.
