In the first half of the concert, we find Juan Diego Flórez as a great interpreter of Italian opera. While the Latin American singer is often associated with the music of Rossini, here the tenor offers transalpine gems such as ‘Una furtiva lagrima’ by Donizetti and ‘Che gelida manina’ by Puccini. To perform the breathtaking overture to Verdi’s La forza del destino, Flórez invites the young musicians of Sinfonía por el Perú. Founded by the tenor himself in 2011 on the model of Venezuela’s El Sistema, the orchestra brings together musicians from disadvantaged backgrounds who receive the finest musical education. Good things never coming singly, the tenor returns in the second half to the loves of his youth with a bouquet of zarzuelas in which the warmth of his timbre slips naturally into this delightful repertoire. A few South American songs from his childhood crown an exhilarating recital.
