Under the artistic direction of Julien Favreau, the Béjart Ballet Lausanne is dedicated to keeping Maurice Béjart’s legacy alive. And what a legacy!
What other choreographer was able to draw several thousand spectators to programmes so modern and so unifying? In 1987, Béjart found in Lausanne an ideal home port for his explorations. To celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary (and, in parallel, the centenary of the choreographer, born in 1927), the Béjart Ballet Lausanne revives four historic ballets as so many milestones of Béjart’s art. In Roméo et Juliette, it is Berlioz’s music that casts its spell over a bewitching pas de deux. Likewise, immortalised by dancers such as Luciana Savignano and Sylvie Guillem, La Luna is a sublime solo on pointe that magnifies the music of Bach. Regarded by specialists as one of the choreographer’s supreme achievements, Bhakti III reflects Béjart’s interest in religion and in Indian spirituality in particular. To close, Mozart Tangos combines Mozartian purity with the sensuality of the Argentine tango. Beauty in music, grace in motion.
