DANIELE GATTI / BEETHOVEN: SYMPHONY NO. 9

Beethoven

Take note, a landmark event! Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 is a work of superlatives. Over an hour of music, a finale that alone lasts as long as the German composer’s ‘smaller’ symphonies, and the revolutionary use of the voice in an Ode to Joy, now a symbol of European fraternity. A musical apotheosis led by the great Italian conductor Daniele Gatti.

Daniele Gatti conducts Verdi: Messa da Requiem: I. Requiem at Verbier Festival 2023

Indeed, the Symphony No. 9 is the crowning achievement of a creative life: heroic like the Third, pastoral like the Sixth, frenzied like the Seventh, the work also heralds the vast choral symphonies of the century to come. An exceptional work calls for an exceptional conductor. In 2023, Daniele Gatti held the audience of the Salle des Combins spellbound with a Verdi Requiem, of breathtaking intensity. With the Italian conductor, dramatic tension and a sense of contrast combine with unfailing orchestral transparency. For his eagerly awaited return at the helm of the Verbier Festival Orchestra, the Principal Conductor of the prestigious Staatskapelle Dresden promises a Symphony No. 9 traced as a path towards joy. A first movement rich in chiaroscuro, a diabolical Scherzo driven by the timpani followed by an Adagio of flowing sensuality then the liberating explosion of the final Ode. ‘All men become brothers’, sings Schiller’s poem. Through its visionary breadth and monumental proportions, the Symphony No. 9 conveys a humanist message, one that has lost none of its force in our troubled times. For this monument, Maestro Gatti will be joined by the combined forces of an outstanding vocal quartet, the Verbier Festival Orchestra and the Orfeó Català choir.
