JANINE JANSEN / GAUTIER CAPUÇON / EVGENY KISSIN
Once upon a time there were three great musicians who loved playing together. All were soloists of international stature, travelling the world’s finest stages. Their musical rapport was so strong and their friendship so deep that they always found time to perform together in Verbier. For the first of the Rencontres Inédites, the spotlight falls on three of the brightest stars of our time, Janine Jansen, Gautier Capuçon and Evgeny Kissin, who come together in one of the jewels of this rare and fascinating formation: Beethoven’s trios. With these dazzling masterpieces, the German composer established himself as the equal of Mozart and Haydn as soon as he arrived in Vienna.

Like Mozart, Beethoven wrote relatively little for the piano trio. Yet it was with the three scores of his Opus 1 that he opened his catalogue, hoping to make his name in Vienna. Two periods unfold across his corpus of seven trios: four youthful works followed by three of maturity. It was under Beethoven’s aegis that this formation, then steeped in lightness and galanterie, took on extraordinary scope, the three instruments becoming equal partners, and the German composer not hesitating to develop forms of vast dimensions, like those of the quartets or symphonies. Dating from 1808, the Trio No. 5 ‘Ghost’ has remained famous for its extraordinary slow movement, music full of shadows and mysteries. Dedicated to his pupil Archduke Rudolph, the Trio No. 7 crowns the corpus with its superlative architecture and sumptuous lyricism. It is hard to imagine more commanding soloists than Janine Jansen on violin, Gautier Capuçon on cello and Evgeny Kissin on piano, to perform such an apotheosis.
