VSEVOLOD ZAVIDOV
Vsevolod Zavidov is a revelation. Following his time at the Academy, the Moscow-born pianist gives a recital that matches the boundless scale of his talent. A programme like a fine calling card: a suite by Haendel, impressive Brahmsian variations, a feverish Dumka and Mussorgsky’s celebrated Pictures at an Exhibition.

A winner of the first Radu Lupu Prize, the Moscow-born pianist has just won the “Prix UBS Jeunes Solistes”, awarded to the most outstanding student enrolled at a Swiss music academy. For several years now, Zavidov has been continuing his studies with Nelson Goerner at the Geneva University of Music. A logical next step for the child prodigy who entered the Gnessin School at the age of four (where other Verbier regulars such as Evgeny Kissin and Daniil Trifonov trained) before quickly giving his first international concerts.
As an opening a Suite by Haendel, then the impressive Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Haendel Op. 24, a superb demonstration of Brahms’s genius for varying colours and atmospheres at the keyboard. The same expressive generosity runs through Tchaikovsky’s Dumka, inspired by a Ukrainian folk genre and by turns melancholy and imperious. As a grand finale, Zavidov takes on one of the emblematic scores of Russian music, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition with its almost cinematic diversity of moods. It is the Verbier Festival’s privilege to place such promising young pianists in the spotlight. Welcome to the big league, Vsevolod Zavidov!
