András Schiff is no stranger to generously timed programmes. An obvious way of loosening and freeing a prodigious technique as the concert unfolds, of course, but also a passionate need for architecture in a programme that leads him to link, within a single recital, the five giants of the repertoire: Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert!
With his expressive playing, Schiff belongs to the illustrious lineage of the great Hungarian school, which has given us names such as Géza Anda, György Cziffra or György Sebők. But what is the Hungarian school of music? Above all, a technique of astonishing assurance but also exceptional clarity, especially in fast passages endowed with truly stunning rhythmic articulation. One gets a good idea of this playing with its sharp resonances in Beethoven, whose inherent tensions Schiff conveys like no one else, and in Schubert, whose modernity he magnifies. Add masterpieces by Bach and classics by Haydn and Mozart, and you have one of the great events of the Verbier Festival 2027.
