At last! Fanny Mendelssohn’s Trio is winning the place it deserves in chamber music. Performed by violinist Alexandra Conunova, cellist Pablo Ferrández and pianist Alexandra Dovgan, this masterpiece was long underestimated. There is indeed something heart-rending in the destiny of Fanny Mendelssohn, a child prodigy like her brother Felix, whose father forbade her to make music outside the private circle. It took a liberating stay in Rome in 1839 for the composer to reveal (a few months before her untimely death in 1847) the full measure of her genius in this supremely inspired Trio. We then look forward to hearing Vilde Frang’s incisive violin and András Schiff’s idiomatic keyboard in the Sonata No. 1 by a Béla Bartók at the height of his modernity. The final guests of an ‘all-star’ evening, Yunchan Lim on piano, Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider on violin and Jaemin Han on cello present the gigantic (and only) Piano Trio that Tchaikovsky composed in memory of the founder of the Moscow Conservatory, Nikolai Rubinstein. With its funeral marches at the opening and close, it is the expressive summit of the Russian composer’s chamber music.
